Project Description

opic
Ken has been accredited in using the Coach@work program for 18 months. This client requested some insight into specific capabilities that may be hampering their success. The coach@work process allowed for clarity on how she saw herself in the key capabilities that related to her specific role.

The process was very simple, with her identifying some of her critical issues as well as attaching her position description. This was sent to OPIC who analysed this information, framed and then administered a specific questionnaire which resulted in a Coach@work analysis, highlighting key capabilities for that role, and how the client was performing against these capabilities. The managers’ report supported the coaching intervention, with specific questions that could support the coaching conversation.

As a result of this intervention, the following reflection from the client helps to summarise the impact of this process:

The last few months have been an exceptional journey of change and transformation in my role and organisation. The challenge of not only keeping up with change, but leading and implementing it has been increased by my relative inexperience in managerial positions. Meeting with Ken each month gave clarity to the progress we were making, and my own personal progress within my role. From the first session I felt comfortable sharing issues, worries and successes, and was continually reassured by the practical tools and techniques that we discussed as possible solutions. Each session was well planned and structured, but with fluidity and flexibility to discuss what was on my mind.

At the end of each session I evaluated my own progress on three key areas that had been identified following an analysis of my role and my perceived strengths and weaknesses. I was surprised by how quickly these areas of improvement became interesting challenges rather than the unconquerable battles I had seen them as beforehand. I enjoyed my role more and more as I saw the barriers to progress overcome and I learnt techniques to respond to challenges, methods to practice in preparation for intimidating situations, and gained insight from self reflection that we so often don’t set the time aside for. I really appreciated being able to communicate honestly and openly with Ken, who responded with an excellent balance of understanding, perspective, reassurance and improvement options. We did some role playing and practicing, introduced and evaluated ‘home work’ style self evaluation techniques, and worked through many specific issues with cognitive-behaviour models that could be reapplied to a wide range of situations. I could ask candid questions and knew I would receive helpful, practical answers.
